Buenos Aires, Argentina to Puerto Iguazu, Argentina
Today was a travel day so we're not expecting too much excitement. We had a 12:30 flight, so enjoyed a leisurely start to the day. The domestic airport was just a short cab ride from our hostel. We left our big packs at the hostel so our check-in was a breeze with no checked luggage. A last minute gate change combined with a language barrier for some of us had a few of us in the wrong line-up for a bit, but it all worked out. I had a window seat and had an amazing view of the river delta to the west as we headed north. The flight was just under 2 hours. We arrived to rain in Iguazu but it didn’t last toooo long. There was a bit of “excitement” as some airport (construction?) workers had put up a roadblock on the road from the airport. Apparently they had not been paid for about 4 months and chose today to go on strike. So - we took a taxi from the airport to the roadblock, walked a bit, and took another taxi into town. We were lucky - our first driver found a second driver for us so we didn’t have to walk too far. And - we only had small backpacks to carry. There were a lot of people walking much greater distances in the rain struggling with much larger suitcases. I’m guessing their buses from town disgorged them at the roadblock and they had to walk the rest of the way. There were more than a few looking a tad stressed. I’m guessing they didn’t figure that into their timing!
It was actually good that it was raining. That way we weren’t tempted to try to fit in any sightseeing. The couple who run the hostel were super friendly and helpful. We got settled, made reservations for a boat tour at the falls tomorrow morning, got some dinner and food supplies. Four of us then walked (about half an hour) down to a viewpoint above the confluence of the Iguazu and ParanĂ¡ Rivers. From there you could see 3 countries - Argentina, Brazil and Paraguay. We looked around for a bit and then headed home via the scenic riverside route just as we were losing daylight. By the time we got back to town darkness had fallen and we took several wrong turns. Thanks to Joan’s tracking ability on her phone, we eventually found our way home. The city sure is a hopping place after dark, but the old ladies have to get up early in the morning....
